Social-cultural background:

In the early days, the people of the locality had been idol worshippers and their faith-life rather shallow. Most of the men-folk were heavily addicted to liquor consumption and reducing their life-span considerably. Consequently, it gave rise to many widows in the village. Most of them were uneducated. Normally, it is the woman who takes the responsibility for the family. Husbands are subservient to the wives.
Eventually, the parents became aware of the need to educate their children for economic independence and enhanced quality of life. They found it hard and not safe to send their children to a far away schools as the roads used to be busy with heavy vehicles engaged in mining activities. Sensing the need of the people Holy Cross sisters responded and open English medium School up to Std.IV in Ambaulim. Most of the people are Catholics by religion and a good number of them belong to different tribal groups.

Service Content	Eductaion At first we had begun with the Socio–Pastoral work at Ambaulim. After making a survey of the place and assessing the socio-economic situation we were able to identify the felt need of the place. Hence we began with the nursery or play school at our neighbor’s house in the adjacent rooms. Our sisters stayed in the old church building then and continued with the play school and social work. SHG groups were formed. We also took care of the BCC. Since there was no school nearby and children were too small to be send far off places, on the request of the people and parish, we started the KG section in the year 2001. The infra-structure was put up for the Primary School i.e. Std 1 to 4 after obtaining the permission from the Education Department. Now we have received grant in- aid from the Government for the school. The medium of instruction is Konkani. We have at present nearly 200 students from LKG to Std IV.

Service Content	Pastoral activities : Sisters are involved in the pastoral activities and all the spiritual exercises in the Parish and its sub-stations. Conduct family visits in the surrounding villages by way of extending their support and encouragement. Sisters attend the Condolence Prayers and prayer services on special occasions in the families.
