Purpose:
The main objective of opening a station in Chemperi in 2002, in the northern part of Kerala was to get an entry into the Archdiocese of Tellichery for vocation promotion as there is a considerable number of catholic population, who are settlers. In course of time, the sisters started a hostel to accommodate the Engineering students of the Vimal Jyothi College of Engineering (run by the Diocese) at the request of the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Mathew Chalil.
Social-cultural background:
The chunk of the population of Chemperi are settlers from Central Kerala who started migrating from 1940 in search of greener pastures. Mustering a lot of courage, many of them ventured out to occupy vast areas of forest land for farming activities. Among them were also a good number of the Roman Catholic families from Central Travancore with a strong socio- economic and religious background. Nevertheless, after the initial struggles of overcoming the hardships and challenges of new the settlement, they took a big leap in achieving self-sufficiency and economic progress.
Eventually, they established themselves on a strong footing. Their determination, hard work, the positive outlook and unity helped them fight a good fight to reach the desired mark of growth and progress.
As most of the settlers hailed from good traditional Catholic families their faith-life was rather strong. With the passage of time new churches were established in different areas and finally giving rise to the formation of a new Diocese of Tellichery (Thalassery) in Kannur Dist. With Mar Sebastian Valloppally as the first Bishop of the ‘Syro Malabar’ Church in the Malabar region. Under the able leadership and support of the Bishop, the Church together with the region could achieve much growth and progress.
