Purpose:
To get an entry into the Diocese of Kanjirapally for various services.
We obtained the official approval to open a house in the diocese of Kanjirapally. Initially, two sisters started working in the Diocesan Social Service Centre called, ‘Malanadu Development Society’ (M.D.S). They stayed in the same campus until a community could be opened.
In the month of November 1993 we bought a property with a small house in Palampra and continued the service in M.D.S. In December 1996 the new convent was built with a provision for an appropriate activity.
Having assessed the need of the place, we started the ‘Vocational Training Institute’ in May 1997. Unfortunately the VTI did not pick up well as the location is not accessible and with shortage of students we had no choice but close it in 2004. The next attempt was to convert the space as a hostel in view of accommodating the students of Amal Jyothi Engineering College. Within a short period, the College authorities made hostel facilities in the College Campus itself (2011).
It has always been a constant search again for a meaningful apostolate in Palampra for a long time. The location being rather in the interior and the progressive people with a lot of opportunities around them, it was not easy to attract stakeholders. However, as good Holy Cross Sisters, we continued to persevere in our search and discernment for always another chance!
Next we offered our space and services to house the students of the ‘Company Secretary Course’ from ‘Alphonsa College’ Mannarakkayam, Kanjirapally. Gradually, the number of students reduced and so that too was wound up. Then we entered into an agreement with the St. Mary’s Rubber Factory, Koovapally to accommodate their staff/working women from August 2016 and it was being continued till 2023.
After a lot of discussions on newer possibilities and much discernment, on January 11, 2018 we laid the foundation stone for the ‘Senior Citizen’s Home’. The Home is open for the elderly since 2021.
