Holy Cross Convent, Nedumkandam

Holy Cross Convent, Nedumkandam, Kerala

House In-Charge: Sr. Leena Njaliath Established: 1996

Purpose:

To promote vocations. To provide job oriented courses such as tailoring, Secretarial practice etc.
In course of time, the local people requested the sisters to consider the possibility of opening an English Medium School, as the children of the locality did not have the opportunity to study in a good English medium school and they knew that we have many well established English medium schools in the northern states of India. So after much negotiation it was decided to begin a CBSE School as a response to the request of the people and the felt need of the time.

Social-cultural background:

Nedumkandam was then a backward hilly region of Idukki district of Kerala, at the border of Tamil Nadu. Followed by the Second World War there was poverty and unemployment in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Hence people from Kottayam, Ernakulam, Alleppy etc. began to migrate to the mountain ranges in large numbers from 1948. The migrants initially had to face the threats of the wild animals, heavy rain, extreme cold, death due to epidemics etc. Amenities like transport facilities, proper roads, electricity, medical facility, churches or educational institutions were non-existent or scarce. But they were a determined people to fight the odds at all cost and started laboring hard together. Gradually they sought the help of Tamil workers of the British estates and started cultivating chiefly spices- coffee, tea, pepper, cardamom etc. which gave good yields in the virgin soil.
On account of the persistent hard work, tenacity of the brave hearts, civilization began, needs grew with the rise in population. The then government of Kerala inclined to protect the settlers by giving registration(Patta) for the land acquired by them. Hence the economy grew stronger and people started enjoying the benefits of development. Places of worship, particularly Christian churches, Schools, offices, business etc sprang up.
Children had to walk miles through the hills and forests to far-away places for education. They were sent to other districts in Kerala and to the neighboring states of India to pursue higher education. Over the years the state of affairs saw a new phase on the path of progress with the cultures of Kerala and Tamil nadu co-existing. Development has taken place in every sphere and economy has grown due to the rich production of cash crops like pepper, coffee, tea and cardamom.
