Purpose:
The Holy cross sisters were invited to Bhayandar about 50 km away from Bombay by Fr. Bhandari in the year 1985 to start a separate school for girls. The parish had already started an English medium school as there was a rising demand for proficiency in English for job opportunities. During the negotiation, it was learnt that the Bishop of the archdiocese of Bombay did not want a separate school only for girls. He wanted co-education which is a more healthy approach. Hence as per the proposal of the Bishop two sisters were appointed to teach in the existing parish school. Thus we began our mission with two teaching posts in Nazareth (Parish) School in Bhayandar while staying in a small ‘store-house’ set-up belonging to the parish from 1985 to 1990 The foundation stone was blessed and laid on 7th may 1990 for the Convent and Social Service Centre building which was completed within a year. Sisters moved to the new convent on 1 st June 1991.
Social-cultural background:
Bhayandar parish consisted mostly of people who were original
inhabitants of the place popularly known as the ‘East- Indians’.
They lived in close proximity with each other in joint families.
Hence celebrations such as baptism, first holy communion,
marriage etc. were village celebrations including sad events.
Goods were exchanged and shared. Proximity brought about
close interaction and intimacy. Hence many marriages took
place among neighbors. People were very particular about
observing religious practices and pious devotions and festal
occasions were celebrated very solemnly. Their main source of
livelihood was farming. Education was at a very elementary
level in the vernacular medium only.
In 1980 Mumbai experienced an exodus from the city and the
suburbs to the Dharavi islands. Builders started buying vacant
plots for development. Suddenly many started selling small
portions of their land holdings at attractive rates. New
buildings/ high-rise flats spiraled all over the place, housing a
huge number of population. Bhayandar has a different look
today.
