Purpose:
To render service in the then suburban parish of Mumbai, Kalyan.
To have a house in Mumbai to facilitate transaction with the mother house and the Indian mission for better accessibility to the airport and the harbor.
The Proposal to have a separate and independent English medium School solely for girls, came up from the Parishners of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church in 1973. Hence on 13th June 1974, the ‘ Holy Cross Convent School’ was started with 400 students from K.G to std IV.
Social-cultural background:
The first unit in the state of Maharashtra, Kalyan, situated 54 km, from Mumbai, close to the central Railway station. It is a thickly populated area with a floating population. The majority of the people belong to the lower middle class. It is a culturally mixed society - with Marathis, Goans, Keralites, Guajaratis, Tamils, Anglo-Indians and Parsies live side by side. The languages spoken by the vast majority of the people are Marathi, Hindi and English.
