Purpose:
True to our Charism ‘Compassionate love for all especially the under privileged’ the sisters came to Ramayanpatti, a village on the highway, about 5 km from Dindigul town. They found the people weak in faith, backward in education, economically poor and low in moral values. So the purpose of founding the community was to strengthen the faith of the people, to uplift and empower the poor through education.
Social-cultural background:
The majority of the people of Ramayanpatti village (95%) are Catholics who settled from different villages in and around Dindigul to earn their livelihood. Many of them are head-load workers.
In times past, the soil was very rich and the climate suitable for cultivation of vegetables, fruits and even paddy. Lot of people from the interior places of TN came over to work as farm hands and some of them bought land from the local landlords and settled.
In recent years, the industrialists and enterprising business people started leather processing unit , rice mills and other small scale industries in large numbers all over Dindigul and contaminated the land, with the chemical waste released to the river water and thus the water bodies became salty. Cultivation was badly affected. The farmers were thrown out of job, turning them into cheap labor force in the newly set up factories and rice mills galore. Due to illiteracy, the youth and adults too opted for loading as a means for livelihood.
Ramayanpatti village has developed by leaps and bounds through our presence and involvement yet the people cling to their age-old customs, rituals and practices. They are deeply rooted in superstitious beliefs. There is a real need for a spiritual formation among the people. The men folk indulge in drinking which has an adverse effect on children and family life. The women of the village go for building work, rice mills or as casual laborers. The younger generation still lacks ambition and has no higher goals in life as they miss the motivating factor at home.
